For Commander Mulcahy's big chase scene (played by Jill Hennessy), John Fasal
records Range Rover skids out in the desert (where it's quiet). Chris Alba
is driving.
John records motorcycle revs from a police bike for the big bridge seige scene
in the first reel.
In order to record the various maneuver's from the driver's onboard perspective
we needed to attach microphones to the bike's tailpipe. A PZM attached
to the muffler picks up a really beefy sound.
For more driver's perspective recordings we put a mic here for protection
from the wind and to pick up the engine noise. When mic'd properly we can
get good accelerations and maneuvers without the perspective changing. One
scene in the movie has a gas powered cement cutter as a weapon. After making
John Roech's foley stage a toxic nightmare we moved outside. Here John is
about to record metal screeches on the bosses car.
The Armorers prepare their arsenal of guns for a two day long recording session,
which included over 25 different guns ranging from a 9mm handgun to an antitank gun.
These are a few of the larger bullets that we used. The smallest one is for
a rifle. The largest is a 20mm shell.
Rich, Andy and John record as the armorer fires around from the .50 cal. On
the table we have two DEVA digital 4 track recorders and two analog stereo
Nagra recorders. We also had two DAT machines in distant locations.
We use various combinations of microphones and recording angles of each shot
fired. In all, We had up to 16 tracks of audio recording at one time. Later
on, we composite the various recordings into killer sounding gun shots that
fit each weapon used in the movie. Here we had to move the mics back further
because the pressure from the 50 cal was overloading the mics.
You can see the shock wave from the 50 cal gun shot. When we were done there
were circular waves in the dirt for about five feet. If we had put a microphone
anywhere in front of the gun where the pressure is greater, it would probably
have ripped the diaphragm. This is a 20mm antitank gun. The larger guns
had a really great well defined sound to them that will be very useful later
when we meld the recordings together. They may even find their way into the
blast from the Hero (Steven Segal)'s hand gun to give it that extra punch.
